Y Pants - Off The Hook, 99 Records 1980
Y Pants were a New York trio composed of visual artists Barbara Ess, Virgina Piersol and Gail Vachon. They mainly played at art spaces and had their own unique sound derived from playing an amplified toy piano, toy drum set, and a baritone ukulele through a distortion unit. Ess was well known for her fanzine “Just Another Asshole” and deeply involved in the no wave scene in New York, playing with influential guitarist Glenn Branca in both his Static and Theoretical Girls projects. Branca produced this Y Pants debut ep with some lovely touches such as the addition of the faked telephone conversation for Ed Bahlman’s equally amazing 99 Records, home to Liquid Liquid, ESG, and the Bush Tetras among others.
