  • THE HUMAN LEAGUE - BEING BOILED, 1978

Inspired by the science fiction board game Starforce: Alpha Centauri, a duo called The Future, who were trying to produce pop music using only electronic instruments (still virtually unheard of in 1977), changed their name to the Human League and enlisted non-musician Philip Oakey to write some lyrics and sing lead. Using mainly a Korg 770S synthesizer and some tape loops, they released their first single Being Boiled in June 1978. They soon hired another non-musician, film student Adrian Wright to become their “Director of Visuals” whose job was to provide lighting, film clips, and slides to accompany the Human League’s live shows. Even though his early contributions were non musical he was credited as a full member on record sleeves. He eventually became a key musical member of the band as both a composer and keyboard player until leaving the group in 1986. The original two members left in 1980 due to a clash of creative directions to form the band Heaven 17.
