DELTA 5 - COLOUR, 1980
The Delta 5 were a female fronted group that formed in the highly charged late 70’s Leeds, England punk scene. Like Liliput, Delta 5 also released just a handful of releases on the Rough Trade label. Their sound was defined by an unconventional two-bass lineup, a fractured mutant-dance beat, and detached, conversational female vocals. They were key figures of the feminist new wave and the Rock Against Racism movement, as well as friends of the Gang of Four and the Mekons, but where those two bands used their early records for political discourse, Delta 5 were more concerned with the personal, hailing sarcastic and often hilarious vindictives at ex-lovers, stalkers, and nerdy guys (their excellent first single “Mind Your Own Business”), or as in the case of “Colour”, pleas for punk-era individuality.
