• DEUTSCH-AMERIKANISCHE FREUNDSCHAFT - Kebabträume, 1980 7”

D.A.F., literally translated as the German-American Friendship, was known for their uncompromising minimalist pop. “Kebabträume” was released as a separate 7” single on Mute Records around the same time as their first album in 1980 while the band was still a four piece featuring thrashed guitars, electronic screeches, hammered drums, and abstract vocal screams. This earned the group an early cult following in the UK but their sound quickly evolved into a more rhythmically intense and minimalistic style as a duo, built around sparse, unsyncopated live drum patterns, a Korg MS-20 synth, and more rhythmic vocals. Their next three albums were produced by legendary Krautrock pioneer Conny Plank, eventually earning them the title of the grandfathers of techno by BBC Radio1 dj John Peel.
